During the three years when the event moved online because of COVID-19, we only participated in the first online edition and skipped the following two. After the return of the in-person event in 2023, we resumed participation, making this our second year back onsite.

While we were not there from the very beginning, we are now among the longer-running participants. Before the pandemic, attendance gradually increased each year, but the atmosphere still felt relatively intimate — almost like a reunion of acquaintances within the geospatial community.

That changed dramatically after COVID.

Last year’s event suddenly grew to around 800 participants and exhibitors combined, and this year it seems to have expanded to roughly 1,200 people in total.

Last year our booth was already busy enough that we barely had time to take breaks, but this year was even more intense — there were moments when we could hardly move at all because of the constant stream of visitors.

Since we had been too busy to even take a photo of our booth last year, I made sure to photograph it before the venue opened this time. In retrospect, that turned out to be a very good decision.

Our booth before the exhibition opened

The venue featured many fascinating booths, including companies and NPOs connected to old friends from the geospatial community, as well as booths from all three companies I have belonged to over the years, past and present.

Unfortunately, however, we had virtually no time to properly walk around and explore other exhibits ourselves. At best, we were able to stop briefly to exchange greetings.

There was certainly no chance to sit down and attend other presentations.

The only exception was during Code for History’s own presentation slot, when we temporarily left the booth unattended so I could listen to Taniura’s presentation.

Taniura has always been a strong presenter, and this was already the second Geo-ten presentation for Code for History following last year’s appearance, so everything felt very polished and natural. Compared to the overly technical explanations I tend to give as an engineer, Taniura did an excellent job explaining things clearly with easy-to-understand diagrams and visuals.

The room was completely full, with many people standing to listen as well. Thank you so much to everyone who attended.

Presentation to a full audience

At the booth, the new flyers designed by Taniura were also very well received thanks to their clarity and accessibility.

To my surprise, many visitors also showed interest in my research handouts on the historical geography of Nara — we even completely ran out of copies.

Both the flyers and the handouts will later be made available for download from this article.

Recently, even though I work in the geospatial field, I had become so focused on Maplat that I was no longer keeping up closely with broader developments in geospatial technology.

Seeing the enormous energy and growth surrounding the field at Geo-ten reminded me that I need to start learning again and reconnect with the wider community.

We plan to participate again next year, so I hope to see you all again at Geo-ten.

On Friday, April 19, 2024, Code for History once again participated in Geo Expo (Geo-ten) 2024, held at Asakusabashi Hulic Hall.
