The region then faced further hardship, including ground uplift, retreating coastlines, isolated communities, and later, severe damage caused by heavy rainfall.

I myself spent two years working as a volunteer in the affected areas following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and after the Great East Japan Earthquake, I was involved in developing IT-based support projects. This time as well, I strongly wanted to help on the ground. But now that I am older, it is no longer as easy for me to rush directly to the disaster area as I once could, so I have been thinking about other ways to contribute.

For the people of Noto, traditional festivals such as the Hikiyama and Kiriko festivals are not only cultural traditions, but also an important source of emotional support and a place where communities reaffirm their bonds.

Code for History therefore supported a crowdfunding campaign launched by Juzo Shrine in Wajima to preserve and restore these traditions: “Noto Peninsula Earthquake | Protecting the Heart and Traditions of Wajima: Toward the Restoration of the Hikiyama and Kiriko Festivals.”

As one milestone in the crowdfunding project, the names of supporters were purified in a Shinto ceremony and dedicated at the shrine’s temporary main sanctuary (announcement, Juzo Shrine news). We are very grateful that the name Code for History was included among them.

We have not yet been able to visit Noto ourselves. Through Maplat, however, we have worked to provide ways of connecting old maps, illustrated maps, and other records of people’s memories with the future. We hope that, in the near future, these technologies can also contribute to the recovery of Noto and to preserving the memories of its communities.

Around six months after the earthquake, I also contributed a short essay to the geography-focused doujin publication Chiri Koryu Hiroba, taking up the debate in Noto over whether outside volunteers should travel to the affected areas. The essay discusses the respective roles of government and private volunteers, as well as new approaches to disaster support in an era of population decline.

The full text is now available online (In Japanese):

👉The Role and Future of Volunteering, Reconsidered Through the Noto Earthquake

We hope to continue doing what we can to help carry Noto’s traditions, communities, and ways of life into the future.

* The featured image below was kindly provided by Juzo Shrine.
